Meditation as Medication
Tai Chi saved my life. Most people will not bother to learn it, tricked by hyperstimulation toward the negative, but that has not stopped me from learning and sharing helpful, even lifechanging ideas I have gained from the practice. Tai Chi is made up of movements and these are composed of principles and postures. There is a world of Tai Chi related concepts, advice and adages applicable for harmony among the effects of gravity and opposition which are helpful for practitioners and all of us.
Whatever the reason for there being a commonplace aversion to Tai Chi is not as important as understanding that there is such. Usually it comes from the confounding uncanniness in the difficulty of being easy, the hardness of softening, but is vocalized in any number of ways. Because there is an aversion to Tai Chi, just as there is to meditation, I don’t usually recommend it to everyone because few would take my advice despite the good it would do for them. I do recommend The Five Tibetan Rites of Rejuvenation to people often, for it is simple, but now I realize that it just sounds too woo for most to even look into. I consider it to be among the simplest and most effective exercises of movements and principles. It is too vigorous for many and too woo for most though.
The four forms of being is one Tai Chi concept I have shared with friends who might complain of lower back issues or certain muscular-skeletal aches and pains we all might go through now and then, sometimes with little reason or explanation. Essentially we experience discomfort when there is disharmony. What do harmonize for more comfort? The four forms of being.
Four Forms of Being
The other day a friend was telling me about some lower back he was experiencing and I suggested The Five Tibeta Rites but as I now realize that just the mention of this sounds esoteric and maybe even ridiculous despite their effective simplicity. I then suggested a Tai Chi principle which is helpful to be mindful of and balance toward healthy and a happy spine.
It is important to balance how much we lie down, sit, stand and walk every day. There are four forms of physical being and physical posture, lying down, sitting, standing and walking. When we do one of these more than we ought to we feel different types of pain throughout our bodies. When we balance these functions we set ourselves up for healthful being. At what percentage one balances these postures depends on the individual but generally most people today sit too much and need to walk too little. Balancing the four forms of posture is a physical curative in and of itself without knowledge of Tai Chi.
Now that is the exoteric understanding of this teaching on the four postures of being. And what is the esoteric teaching? It is important to balance our meditation postures to incorporate and harmonize the four different types of meditation. The different meditation types can be done together in one practice or just occasionally combined with your regular practice. And if you have been meditating in one posture and perhaps one type of meditation then incorporating the other meditation postures can be extremely rewarding. Integrating different postures in a meditative state institutes new dendrite formation as does walking in different places and paths.
There are so many different types of meditations and none are necessarily wrong or more right so incorporate what you already know and learn more. One process which can be done in each of the four postures and is rather important practice in Tai Chi is paying attention to the four parts of the breath and lengthening and deepening the attention to the inhalation, the pause full, the exhalation and the pause empty. For more on the matrix of breath.
If you are impatient and perhaps have found that meditation does not suit you for it is difficult I must assure you that nothing worth doing is easy. However further incorporation of the four meditation postures soothes the busy mind which does not allow you to just be. Try meditating for a couple or few minutes in each of the four postures. Don’t count time, just be, simply. You will find you can immerse yourself into meditative state more deeply with greater faculty.
If you are starting your day and looking to bring a meditative mind state into the world you can begin with lying down meditation, then sit up, then stand up, then bring it into walking. And if you are cooling down begin by walking, then settle into standing, then sit down, then lie down. Before you even have the slightest impatient impulse you will have incorporated your meditation medication.
Use the Kaizen practice. This is the 1 minute a day inspirational trick to raise action. Practice your self-development for 1 minute a day and you will see results. Practice meditation for 1 minute and you will eventually notice great change with steady little input. Or your juggling or whatever is your self-development hobby, your kung fu. Can you not practice meditation for minute? Can you not practice each of the four types of meditation postures for 1 minute? Of course, you can. Little steps lead to further expansion. 1 minute transforms into patience for 2 minutes and so on.
